Kay’s Saturday Thoughts: Setting Boundaries w/ Family & Friends

Updated: Nov 8, 2024

Hey there, fellow entrepreneurs! 😊

Welcome to "Kay’s Saturday Thoughts" where I share my insight and maybe some opinions on various mindset topics of business OUTSIDE of marketing and cotent.

Today, we're tackling a biggie: setting boundaries when working with those closest to us! Trust me, I’ve been there—and sometimes still find myself gently reminding everyone to use the website or drop an email instead of pinging my personal phone line. Let's chat about the art of setting boundaries when mixing business with those closest to us. Trust me, it's all about keeping the love alive while maintaining professionalism!

Why Boundaries Matter 🛑

First off, let's talk about why boundaries are so important. When family and friends become customers, things can get a bit fuzzy. You want to keep your relationships intact and still run a successful business. Without them, misunderstandings can crop up, leading to unnecessary stress and tension. Setting boundaries is all about maintaining professionalism while keeping those relationships strong. It’s a win-win! 🎉

Different Ways to Set Boundaries 🧩

Now, setting boundaries might sound a tad tricky, but fear not—I’m here to guide you through it!

  1. Communicate Clearly: Lay out your rules from the get-go. Whether it’s a friendly chat or a quick email, let them know your business policies. My policy is to handle orders via the website or through office communication channels. A friendly reminder here and there doesn’t hurt either! It’s all about keeping things smooth and professional.

  2. Be Consistent: Stick to your guns! If you’ve set a rule not to discuss business over dinner, don’t make exceptions. Consistency helps others understand and respect your boundaries.

  3. Have a Heart to Heart: Explain how your business operates and why it's crucial for everyone to follow the same procedures. This will help them understand that your request isn't personal—it's just business!

  4. Use Tech Wisely: Automate responses, set up work-only notifications, or use scheduling tools to manage communications. This way, your personal time stays yours. 📱

Respecting Other Business Owners 🤝

Now, here's a golden rule: As business owners, we should respect each other's rules too. Just as you wouldn’t want someone bypassing your rules, don’t overstep theirs. It's all about mutual respect and understanding that we’re all in this together. Supporting each other’s policies is a great way to show appreciation and respect. It's all about building a supportive community where everyone thrives. 🙌

No Guilt Trips Allowed! 🚫

And lastly, don’t let anyone guilt trip you into bending your rules. Never forget, your policies are there for a reason—to help you run your business smoothly and keep your sanity intact. Stand firm with a smile, and remind them that these boundaries help you provide the best service possible. Remember, setting boundaries is all about creating a balance that works for everyone. It might feel a bit awkward at first, but with a little practice, it’ll become second nature.

It’s all about keeping our relationships strong and our businesses thriving. And hey, I’m here to help if you need any more tips or just want to share your own stories. 💪✨
